hellboy reboot

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Hellboy is officially getting a reboot!

Early this year it was announced to the surprise of many fans that the Hellboy franchise is getting a reboot.

The first two films, directed by Guillermo Del Toro and starring Ron Perlman, were both commercially and critically successful. Fans of the franchise and Del Toro himself were lobbying for a third instalment in the series.

In February 2017, Del Toro announced via Twitter that Hellboy 3 would never happen, which caused an uproar in the fan community. However a few weeks following the tweet, the plans for a reboot were announced.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Hellboy reboot.

1 – Del Toro and Ron Perlman won’t be returning

Both Del Toro and Ron Perlman will not be returning for the reboot, much to the dismay of comic-book fans around the world. Instead, directorial duties fall to Neil Marshall, who is best known for directing the horror film The Descent and two Game Of Thrones episodes.

The screenplay is being written by the original creator of Hellboy, Mike Mignola. This announcement has somewhat eased the pain of fanboys (but we’re all still salty about Del Toro and Perlman!).

2 – David Harbour is Hellboy

David Harbour was announced to take on the role from Ron Perlman. Harbour, best known for his roles on Netflix’s Stranger Things and Black Mass, has big hooves to fill. Ron Perlman’s portrayal of the character was near perfect, and David Harbour didn’t look like he could pull off the devil may care attitude Perlman portrayed so effectively.

However, the studio released a promo image of Harbour as Hellboy and it was met with overwhelmingly positive reactions. Let’s not forget that basing an opinion about the movie off a still image is silly (*cough* Heath Ledger Joker *cough*). Still, the studio has done enough to excite fans around the world.

3 – Hellboy will face off against The Blood Queen

The primary antagonist of the Hellboy reboot will be Nimue The Blood Queen. If you have no idea who that is that’s okay – I don’t either.

In the comics, the Blood Queen is one of Hellboy’s most powerful adversaries. An ancient witch, Nimue the Blood Queen is sure to give Hellboy a run for his money. Milla Jovovich, best known for the Resident Evil series, was cast to play the character, and I must say she looks like a perfect fit.

4 – It’s going to be R-rated

The first two films were rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence, but director Neil Marshall announced that this is going to a hard, gritty R-rated film. We can expect to see lots of blood, and a darker and more badass Hellboy (if that’s possible).

Creator Mike Mignola said that this version will lean towards more of a horror film than a fantasy, which may be why the studio has decided to go for an R-rating. Marshall’s background in horror films will be very instrumental in incorporating horror elements to the film.

This reboot is going to more scary and visceral and is a great way to differentiate it from Del Toro’s films, which at times felt like fairytales.

5 – The Hellboy reboot is coming sooner than you expected!

Despite only being announced in early February 2017, the Hellboy reboot is slated to hit cinemas in 2018. Shooting began early in September and should be wrapped up by late 2017. We haven’t even seen a trailer yet, and there was no announcement at Comic-Con. But fans can expect at least a teaser very soon.

Final Thoughts

The initial reactions to a Hellboy reboot were negative. However, recent announcements have turned around the perception of the film.  I would’ve loved to see the third film in Del Toro’s franchise but everything about this reboot is looking very promising.

I am very excited to see a horror take on the character. After all he is from the fiery pits of Hell (in case you couldn’t tell by his name). All aboard the hype train!

I love film, adore video games and am ambivalent towards anime.
