The CW’s Batwoman TV show has found its lead in Ruby Rose.
Following months of speculation, Ruby Rose has been cast as Kate Kane in the new Batwoman TV show, set for 2019. Rose will make her debut appearance as Kane during the Arrowverse crossover slated for December of this year.
Batwoman is being produced by Greg Berlanti, the man behind several DC comics-to-screen properties, including the Arrowverse and upcoming DC Universe shows Titans and Doom Patrol. The show will be written and executive produced by Caroline Dries, best known for her work on The Vampire Diaries, Melrose Place and Smallville.
In the DC comics, Kate Kane is a woman of wealth who is inspired by Batman to protect the city of Gotham and fight crime. The official logline from CW confirms that the show will focus on her journey to become Batwoman:
“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope. Based on the characters from DC.”
Rose will be the first genderqueer lesbian actor to play a lead superhero on screen. The announcement comes shortly after the casting of the first transgender actor, Nicole Maines, as transgender superhero Nia Nal, in The CW’s Supergirl.
Rose came into prominence following her role as inmate Stella in seasons three and four of Orange Is The New Black. She has since gone on to star in a number of blockbuster productions, including Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, xXx: Return of Xander Cage, John Wick: Chapter 2 and Pitch Perfect 3. She will soon be seen in the Jason Statham giant-shark vehicle, The Meg.
The Batwoman show is yet to be confirmed and much will rely on Rose’s performance during the crossover if the show is to go ahead.
