The first teaser trailer for Captain Marvel is here, but some fans have been left underwhelmed.
After a long time waiting, the first teaser trailer for Captain Marvel has finally been released.
The film will tell the story of Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, played by Oscar winner Brie Larson. Current reports suggest that Danvers is being set up as the next big face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With that in mind, there’s a lot riding on this film. Unfortunately, the Captain Marvel trailer has left quite a few fans disappointed. Many now have concerns about the character’s upcoming debut.
Here’s why they shouldn’t be worried.
Remember, this was a teaser trailer.
One key complaint is that there just wasn’t enough information in the trailer.
What they need to remember is that this was only a teaser trailer. ‘Teaser’ being the operative word. The purpose of a teaser trailer is to tease. They need to show just enough to get fans excited about a film.
On that score, the Captain Marvel trailer has done exactly what it was intended to do. In fact, it gave us more than we would expect from most teasers.
The trailer shows us a young Nick Fury, one of the film’s key drawcards. It shows us Jude Law as Mar-vell. We get a brief shot of Agent Coulson, returning to a big screen Marvel adventure for the first time since The Avengers. And of course, there’s the money shot of a glowy-eyed Captain Marvel charging up.
That’s quite a lot to have packed into a teaser. Plus, we’ll most likely get at least one more longer trailer before the movie is released.
Even then, don’t expect any huge reveals. In the past, Marvel have been experts at getting fans excited while revealing very little of what the film is actually about. The Doctor Strange and Avengers: Infinity War trailers provide perfect examples of this.
No, those aren’t all of Captain Marvel’s powers.
Since the herald of her arrival appearing in Infinity War’s post credits scene, there has been a lot of talk about exactly what kind of punch Carol Danvers can pack (and we’re not talking about her punching an old lady).
From the information we have so far, general consensus seems to be that Captain Marvel will in fact be the strongest Avenger when she joins the surviving team in Avengers 4.
So, some fans have complained, how come she wasn’t showing off that level of power in the trailer?
Well, part of the answer is that she was never going to. As mentioned earlier, Marvel films are historically very good at not spoiling the best bits in trailers.
However, that’s not the only reason. Longer term Marvel fans will be aware that Carol Danvers is at her most powerful when in her ‘Binary’ form. They would also be aware that this is not an ability she has always had, or even one that she always has access to.
Captain Marvel takes place in the early ’90s, over twenty years before we will meet the character again in Avengers 4. It is entirely possible that Carol has never obtained full Binary form yet when the first film begins.
To reach Binary form, Carol must absorb huge amounts of energy. Unfortunately, the first time the transformation occurs in the comics, it severs her emotional connection to earth and its people.
If this occurs in the film, it could explain Carol’s absence between Captain Marvel and Avengers 4. It would also be a massive spoiler, which explains why any such moment would be left out of Captain Marvel’s trailers.
There’s only one solution. If the fans want to see Carol Danvers at full power, they’ll just have to go see Captain Marvel on the big screen in 2019.
