It’s a mash-up you wouldn’t expect to work, yet somehow, it does. Now comic fans are eagerly awaiting the next round of DC/Hanna-Barbera crossovers.
Crazy crossovers seem to be the next big thing in comics.
The partnership between DC and classic cartoon giant Hanna-Barbera has already brought fans a few unexpected delights. One of these is the post-apocalyptic Scooby Doo re-imagining Scooby Apocalypse, which has just reached issue 30. That’s impressive for a series that many wrote off as a gimmick.
Then we have a collection of DC/Hanna-Barbera crossovers that either has heroes teamed up with or pitted against the classic cartoon characters. One of these, a Suberboy/Robin/Dynomutt team-up dubbed ‘The Dog Knight’, has received critical acclaim.
Now, a second round of crossovers is on the way. Let’s see what to expect when they hit the shelves.
1. Deathstroke/Yogi Bear special #1
Yogi Bear is back, but he’s not just here for your Pic-a-nic basket.
This DC/Hanna-Barbera crossover re-imagines Yogi as an evil spirit haunting Jellystone Park. When the ghost bear begins kidnapping campers, Ranger Smith must hire someone to take Yogi down. That ‘someone’ is Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke.
This issue will be written by Frank Tieri and Mark Texeira.
2. Green Lantern/Huckleberry Hound Special #1
Huckleberry Hound will fight for you! And he’ll be rocking a tie-dye shirt while he does it.
The world has turned on Huckleberry Hound after hearing him speak out against the Vietnam War. Things become even more complicated for poor Hucckleberry when he is caught up in the Civil Rights movement of the ’70s. Enter John Stewart, Vietnam Veteran and new Green Lantern recruit. He teams up with Huckleberry to fight for social justice.
This crossover will be written by Mark Russel and Rick Leonardi. Russel is no stranger to Hanna-Barbera inspired comics, having previously written the acclaimed series Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles.
3. Nightwing/Magilla Gorilla #1
Magilla Gorilla is in trouble, and only Nightwing can get him out of it.
In this DC/Hanna-Barbera crossover, Dick Grayson aka Nightwing, arrives in Hollywood for a meeting with a talent agent. He finds the agent dead in a grisly murder scene. The evidence points to Magilla Gorilla as the prime suspect, but Nightwing isn’t convinced. The pair take to the streets to clear Magilla’s name.
The issue will be written by Heath Corson and Tom Grummet.
4. Superman/Top Cat #1
TC to the rescue!
A brand new monster appears in the city. Looking like a sentient pile of Kale, it is soon dubbed ‘Kalien’. It is up to Superman and Top Cat to defeat Kalien and make the streets safe again.
The comic will be written by Dan DiDio and Shane Davis.
Serious comic collectors will want to get their hands on all four DC/Hanna Barbera crossovers. Each one will feature part of a brand new four-part story starring Hanna-Barbera favourite Secret Squirrel.
The comics are due to hit the shelves in late October. Happy reading!
