Many Marvel fans are already neck-deep in an MCU rewatch in preparation for the release of Avengers: Endgame.
If you haven’t started your own rewatch yet, there’s still time. However, it might be cutting it a little to tight to fit in all twenty-one films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before Endgame hits cinemas. Especially with things like ‘real-life responsibilities’ getting in the way.
If you don’t have time for the full rewatch, don’t worry. Digital Fox has got your back!
We’ve cut things down to the most basic, vital information. Here are the most important films to rewatch before Endgame.
The first Avengers film remains one of the best the MCU has to offer. Nothing beats the thrill of seeing all your favourite heroes teaming up on screen for the first time.
Aside from being filled with sheer awesome, the movie features quite a few important elements that built into the wider MCU. Avengers includes not one, but two objects later revealed to contain Infinity Stones. The Tesseract held the Space Stone, while Loki’s sceptre concealed the Mind Stone. The film also features the first appearance of Thanos in a chilling mid-credits sequence.
Rumors and set photos suggest that our heroes may time-travel back to the battle of New York during Endgame. So, a refresher on the events of the first Avengers could be a good idea.
2.Guardians Of The Galaxy
At first glance, Guardians Of The Galaxy seemed to be the least connected to the rest of Marvel’s films. After two phases of mostly Earth-bound adventures, the Guardians sent the MCU hurtling into space. However, said hurtling into space made the Marvel Cinematic Universe a true universe, and told fans more about some of its biggest threats.
Guardians Of The Galaxy gives fans their first introduction to Thanos and the horrors he is capable of (ie, ordering a slaughter on Drax’s planet that resulted in the deaths of his wife and daughter). The film also gives us the first full run down on the Infinity Stones. This is vital information for anyone learning about the Marvel Universe from the films rather than comics.
This movie also gives us some information on Rocket Raccoon. Who he was before the Guardians, and who he could become again without them. This could be an interesting insight heading into Endgame.
3. Avengers: Age Of Ultron
Age Of Ultron is considered by most fans to be far the lesser of the first two Avengers films. This may be true. However, the film is packed full of important moments foreshadowing what is to come.
While Guardians Of The Galaxy introduced the Infinity Stones to the MCU as a whole, Age Of Ultron introduced them to the Avengers. We were also introduced to the idea of characters given power by the stones, in Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and The Vision.
Some fans even believe that the film may have given us an early glimpse of the Snap.
4. Captain America: Civil War
After two phases of coming together, Captain America: Civil War tore the Avengers in two. Cap and Iron took very different stances on the Sokovia Accords, and when a framed Bucky Barnes was added into the mix, the situation exploded.
Knowing the events of Civil War will be important going into Endgame. It will give fans a reminder of some of the different character dynamics at play.
The Russo brothers have stated that Infinity War would have had a very different outcome had Cap and Tony been working together. Civil War showed us the devastating consequences of what happens when they are not.
5. Avengers: Infinity War
This one is a no-brainer. Of course viewers will want a refresher course on the devastating first half of Thanos’ story before jumping into part two.
In Infinity War, Thanos shattered the MCU, destroying half of our favourite heroes. Reminding ourselves of the scope of the devastation will give fans an extra kick to want to see it fixed in Endgame.
6. Ant-Man & The Wasp
Ant-Man & The Wasp is probably a more important film than most fans realise.
The story of the film itself does not have much bearing on the battle against Thanos, apart from the theory that this movie’s climax is taking place during the early stages of Infinity War. However, Scott Lang gains extensive knowledge of the Quantum Realm in this film. This, coupled with a shocking mid-credits sequence, could make Scott a game-changing character come Endgame.
So, there they are. The six most important films to rewatch before Endgame.
Of course, even with the limited time remaining, there’s no reason to limit yourself to just these six. Throw a few personal favourites into the mix as well. Whatever it takes to prepare yourself before Avengers: Endgame hits theatres in a couple of weeks.
